  • Bruce Willis offers to give ski resort to charity

    05/04/2012

Willis, star of the 'Die Hard' films and many more movies, has owned Soldier Mountain, a 1,150 acre skiing area since 1996, but is said to be willing to gift it to a local non-profit organisation.

The actor, 57, has already put his lavish home in the nearby town of Hailey on the market for $15 million (£9.5 million), along with a local bar and nightclub he owns in the area that has a pricetag of $4 million.

A value has not been put on his ski resort, which reportedly operated at a loss over the last few years. It includes three lifts which carry skiers up 1,425ft and runs through pristine glades.

It is billed as a more homely, family ski destination than the Sun Valley resort 65 miles away which attracts Hollywood stars.

Willis and his former wife, Demi Moore, became part of the celebrity scene in the Sun Valley region during the 1990s

Ted Beeler, president of a ski area planning firm working on Soldier Mountain's future, told the Idaho Mountain Express: "The owner wants to turn ownership to a non-profit entity that could continue operations of the ski area."

The ski hill is on public land and operates under a permit from the US Forest Service. Under the plan that permit could be turned over at no cost to a local group called the Soldier Mountain Recreation Association, which would seek charitable donations to keep the resort running.

John Palan, a spokesman for the group, said: "If we can get our ducks in a row, seek sponsors and new members, we would like to transfer the Forest Service permit and continue operations."

Mr Palan, who used to work as a ski lift attendant, said: "I think there is a realisation that the local economy is dependent in a lot of ways on the recreation that happens up on Soldier Mountain.

"We are hoping that people love Soldier Mountain and this ski area enough that they want to be involved and have a lasting legacy that they were a part of."
