Chamonix town is in the commune of Haute –Savoie in the French Alps. Chamonix ‘s population is around 9,800 and is ranked 865th within France. Chamonix is well known for its mountains and the famous Mont Blanc. It must be noted that the Mont Blanc does not fall within the borders of Chamonix but those of its neighbours St Gervais les Bains and Courmayeur in Italy. With an area of 245 km2 it’s the 4th largest commune in mainland France.
They call this area the “Roof of Europe” and you can see why as this is the world’s third most visited natural area, the area attracts millions every year from skiers to mountaineers.
Chamonix is also famous for its Glaciers which cover an area roughly 125 km2 , the Bossons glacier and the Mer de la Glace which is one of the most visited sites in the world.
When to English aristocrats William Windham and Richard Pocock discovered the Priory of Chamonix in 1741 little did they know what would become of this town and the glaciers that surrounded Chamonix. People flocked to see the Mer de Galce and its beauty and the Mont Blanc range. The first inn opened in 1770 and the first summit of Mont Blanc in 1786 sealed this mountain community forever. Things continued to grow, with more hotels, inns, a road and railway link from other villages to Chamonix brought more tourists and the introduction of skiing.
Today you can ski 6 different areas and the world famous Vallee Blanche, which can be reached via the Aiguille di Midi which transports you up to 3800 meters above sea level from where you then take a walk across a ridge to begin your decent.
Chamonix today sees tourists pretty much all year round, from skiers in the winter months, climbers and mountain bikers throughout the summer months. We must not forget those who come to stare at the mountains and all it has to offer as well.
