Morzine ski resort can be found in the Portes du Soleil region of the French Alps with over 650 km of skiing, spread between 12 villages over 2 countries France and Switzerland.
Morizne has been a big favourite with the British market over the last 20 years. Before becoming a ski resort Morzine was traditional market and farming village, which today you can still see cows grazing in the summer time high up on the mountains.
It was you could say the building of the Grand Hotel in the mid 1920s, Morzine’s first hotel. The owner Francois Baud gave the villagers a new life. The village started to see more holidaymakers coming in the summer which meant many farmers and slate miners could leave there jobs and find work in the tourist trade.
In 1934 Morzine opened La Pleney cable car which opened up the mountain to winter sports which now was becoming very popular all over the French Alps. Following new lifts over on Nyon and Chamossiere, the locals wanted to expand the ski area and found the perfect spot. In 1960 Jeau Vuarnet took control of building on the plateaux above Morzine into what today we know as Avoriaz.
The village has a population of around 3, 050 with a very strong full time British Community involved heavily in the ski industry which is now the major source of income for the village. Not only is the village a winter destination but a very popular stop off the summer guests. With its lush green rolling mountains this has become a major hub for mountain bikers and walkers. Its close proximity to Lake Geneva means with a very short drive you spend your days trying out the many water sports that are available.
