France and the ski resorts of the French Alps accommodate around 35% of the British ski market. The French Alps has some of the largest network of lifts and pistes that you will find anywhere in the world. You will find ski resorts from 800 meters to the highest being Val Thorens at 2300 meters above sea level.
You will find dramatic mountains, resorts with stunning scenery to beautiful lakes. Many of the ski resorts have been created around old traditional villages some who today are still farming villages and don’t just rely on the ski industry as their main source of income.
In the late sixties and early seventies saw the making of the Purpose built resort, higher altitude areas with plateau’s where perfect for high rise buildings coming out of the snow offering ski and ski out accommodation.
One of the greatest advantages of skiing in the French Alps is that driving from the Uk can be reasonably short, with areas like Portes du Soleil, Grand Massif, Aravis region and the Mont Blanc area being around a 9 hour drive.

Ski accommodation in France has grown considerably since the explosion of the ski chalet holiday. Around 45 years ago you could only find hotels and gites, but then came along the ski chalet experience. In the late sixties the British skier was looking for somewhere that felt like home, no French to speak and maybe if they were lucky a full English breakfast. Back then ski accommodation consisted of 15 people to one bathroom.
If you were staying in what then they called a upmarket chalet you would have a young girl cooking you breakfast, maybe afternoon cake and your dinner. Things improved slightly in the 90’s as skiers where earning more money and demanded better services.
Today the catered ski chalet holiday business is massive, chalet companies battle it out each year to offer more and give you a fantastic ski holiday. For the services offered this is where you will find the biggest change. Bedrooms with their own bathroom, more than one staff to look after you, professional chefs cooking restaurant style food, airport transfers, the list goes on.
