Val d’Isere ski resort can be found in the Tarentaise Valley in the Savoie region of the French Alps. The village can be found 5 km from the Italian border and sits next to the Vanoise National Park which was created in 1963. It is ideally located with great links to the airports of Lyon, Grenoble, Chambery and Geneva.
Together with its neighbours Tignes, Val d’Isere forms the Espace Killy ski area with over 300km of ski runs, some say this is the most beautiful ski area in the world. The first sign of human habitation date back before Roman Times, the village received parish rights in 1637 and built the parish church which stands today in the centre of the village.
It was not till around 1929 that a Parisian by the name of Jacques Mouflier made the dangerous journey up the valley to Val d’Isere , amazed by this hidden valley and the potential he started to think big. At the time there were only four hotels which only opened in the summer time, with no electricity this was really for the hardcore.
Lacking any money, he set about convincing the locals to open there doors for the winter and in 1936 the first drag lift was built on the slopes of the Solaise Mountain. Thanks to two government officials who in 1937 where found trapped in the village by 4 meters of snow and it was this incident that really put Val d’Isere on the map. In 1938 work started on the first cable car, Telepherique de Solaise, it is believed that the President of the French Ski Federation predicted that Val d’Isere would fail, well it looks like he was proven wrong.
Val d’Isere has from its early days grown in to one of the best ski resorts in the world, joined with Tignes to create the Espace Killy which was named after Jean Claude Killy the famous Olympic downhill skier, the area has gone from strength to strength.
