Chatel ski resort is situated in the Rhone Alps in France. A popular ski area with the British and the locals who flock to this resort from the villages surrounding Lake Geneva at weekends. Chatel is part of the largest ski area in the world, Portes du Soleil with over 650 km of skiing.
Though a major ski resort Chatel is still very much a working farming village with over 40 farms still working the land today. You will also find that the village is still very unspoilt, no high rises, no concrete blocks but traditional chalets and apartments blending in with the surrounding mountains.
Although a popular winter sports destination Chatel is a dual purpose resort, very popular with mountain bikers and has seen an increase of bikers in the last couple of years. With closeness to Lake Geneva it also means there is plenty to do on the Lake from sailing, fishing, water skiing and wakeboarding. The valley down to the Lake also makes this a great area for white water rafting and kayaking.
You will find plenty of walking and beautiful lakes high above Chatel village itself.
Another unique activity to Chatel is the Fantasticable , a zip wire suspended between to mountains spanning the Pre la Joux Valley below, a must for the hardcore! Reaching speeds of over 50km.
The month of August celebrates both the Fete de la St Laurent and the Fete de la Belle Dimanche which we have heard are worth seeing.
Accommodation in Chatel can vary from traditional apartment blocks to a very good selection of catered ski chalets and self-catered apartments. A strong but small British community run several private catered chalets in the village which are worth checking out.
