Bareges Grand Tourmalet

The ski resort of Bareges – Grand Tourmalet is one of the largest ski areas in the French Pyrennees with over 100km of available pistes. The ski area sits underneath the giant Pic du Midi.

The area extends from Bareges to La Mongie which are situated either side of the famous Col du Tourmalet. This area is fantastic for all types of skier and snowboarder.

In 2003 it was decided to open up the cable car that takes visitors to the observatory at 2877m to skiers also. This has created some of the best off piste routes in the Pyrennees, and the Alps. Bernard Pez, the President of the Compagnie des Guides des Pyrenees considers the Pic “Technically more difficult than the Vallee Blanche in Chamonix.

This is all covered by your standard lift pass, the addition of the extra routes down from the top of the cable car has really put this area on the map in terms of what it can offer to the off piste skier. Unknown to the mass ski market, means that you can ski fresh snow days after a dump, unlike some other resorts.

The resort has plenty to offer for those interested in winter activities from down hill skiing, dog sledding, cross country, snow shoeing and plenty more. The ski resort is a two sided area with Bareges on the west still retaining its traditional charm of a Pyrenean village. To the east at the very heart of the ski area lies La Mongie which is a ski in ski out resort.

If you are lucky enough you may even spot Mathieu Crepel , double world snowboard champion for Big air and Half pipe.

If you’re a keen road biker than this area is a must in the summer time with some of the toughest  climbs in France, the area features almost in every Tour.
